Surprising Truth: How Deion Sanders Almost Became the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys?

Keeping it in the family: Why Deion Sanders, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys make sense | FOX Sports

Deion Sanders revealed how close he got to taking the Dallas Cowboys job after getting linked to the team at the end of the 2024 season.

After a 7-10 season resulted in another playoff miss, the Cowboys parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy.

Meanwhile, Sanders wrapped up his second season in charge of the Colorado Buffaloes with a 9-4 finish and an Alamo Bowl appearance. His 2024 season was a drastic turnaround from 2023 when the team limped to a 4-8 finish after going 3-0 to start.

Jerry Jones

With the vacancy in Dallas, Sanders’ name was quickly tossed in the hat for potential candidates to run Jerry Jones’ side. Reports of Coach Prime meeting with the club surfaced before the Cowboys ultimately promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to head coach.

In the latest episode of the Skip Bayless Show, Sanders confirmed that the conversations did happen. However, a formal offer was never made.

‘No, I’m not going to say it was offered to me,’ Sanders said. I’m going to say it was an opportunity that could’ve presented itself, and we didn’t go to that next level.

‘But Jerry was always honest and straight up from Day 1,’ he continued.

Schottenheimer held the offensive coordinator title for two years, but the play-calling duties were handed to McCarthy in 2023 and 2024.

Despite being linked to the NFL, Sanders has previously made his commitment to the program in Boulder clear on several occasions.

Deion Sanders to the Dallas Cowboys may be more realistic than fans realize

Apart from the publicity his hiring would have brought to the already popular franchise, Sanders’ history with the Cowboys was another indicator of what would have been a high-profile reunion in Dallas.

After a one-year stint with the San Francisco 49ers ended in a Super 29 victory, Sanders signed a lucrative deal with the Cowboys in 1995 as a free agent.

The 1994 Defensive Player of the Year and Pro Football Hall of Famer helped the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title in his first year with the team, the franchise’s third in four years.

Sanders was named to four Pro Bowls and three First-team All-Pro nods as a Cowboy before leaving for Washington in 2000.
